GMMC - Voxel Engine in GameMaker Studio 2
A downloadable project for Windows
GMMC is a small, in-development voxel sandbox engine running in GameMaker Studio 2.
GMMC has been a passion project of mine for the past few months, aiming to capture the feel of older voxel games, especially Minecraft Beta, in GameMaker.
The goal isn’t to chase realism — it’s about capturing that older sense of exploration: simple blocks, dramatic terrain, and worlds that are fun to explore and get lost in.
GMMC is very much a work in progress, there are lots of features that still need to be added, and bugs are inevitable. You can explore the infinite world, fly around, build and mine, and see the terrain generate, but it’s still early and experimental.
Features are added slowly, with a focus on keeping things clean and enjoyable.
What to Expect:
- Blocky voxel worlds with varied terrain
- Infinitely generating worlds
- Mining and placing blocks
- Picking up items
- Secure saving/loading of your world
- Commands and cheats
- Calm exploration, no monsters! (yet...)
Current State:
This is not a finished game yet. There’s no survival mode, crafting, or objectives — just a world to explore and edit as a proof of concept. There will be bugs, issues and missing features, but these will be sorted out as development continues.
This is simply a bare-bones proof of concept of an evolving project.
Controls and Commands:
- Use WASD to move, and the mouse to look around
- Mine blocks using left click, place using right click
- Press F3 to bring up the debug overay
- Press F3+G draw chunk borders
- Press F11 to toggle fullscreen
- Press T to begin open the chat, enter to send a command, and escape to close it
- Press up arrow in the chat to bring up your previous command
- Press escape to open the pause menu
- /fly true/false - Enables or disables flight
- /tp x,y,z - Teleports to a coordinate within render distance
- /give item_id, count - Gives a select number of items to you
List of item_ids: sugarcane, stick, apple, seeds grass_block, dirt_block, stone, sand, cactus, log, leaves, bedrock, snow
I Found a Bug or Have an Idea:
If you found a bug or have a feature you'd like to see added, please leave a comment and we'll discuss it!
GMMC exists because making worlds is fun.
If you enjoy exploring unfinished projects or just flying through blocky worlds, you might enjoy spending some time here.
If you enjoyed the demo and want to support development, consider leaving me a tip here
Thanks for checking out GMMC!

Hey, nice work.
I’m currently also working on a Minecraft-like project (still very early), so I’m looking closely at similar engines.
Things I noticed positively:
Movement feels good
Sugarcane moves in the wind
Very strong performance (I had ~4000 FPS)
The textures look similar to those used in official Minecraft update trailers
Overall, the current state of development is very solid
Around 2000 FPS even with 32 chunks
Bug:
Water appears everywhere below height 62
Features I could imagine:
Sneaking
Falling sand blocks
Damage from cactus (and cactus destroying blocks)
General damage system
Crafting
Loading textures/mods outside the EXE (e.g. for texture packs)
Looking forward to future updates.
Thanks for checking it out!
I'm glad to hear the performance wasn't an issue at least. The bug with the water is a known one, and it'll be patched soon. I'm also adding sneaking and crafting next!
Sounds good. I’ll check it out again once those updates are added.
